RESOURCE FOR ALEXIAN: OLD NEW ADVERTS

Alexian...here are those examples of print media I was referring to t'other day. I think they are fantastic. Hope they inform your own ideas for your print media linked production.

WHY EGYPT'S DIGITAL UPRISING IS DIFFERENT: Time Magazine article.

A2 students should be aware of how digital media is being used as a weapon in the struggle for democratic freedom. The following articles deal with issues that are relevant to MEST 3 and relate to the idea of controlling internet access. The US government have already discussed the idea of creating a 'KILL SWITCH' that terminates internet access in times of civil unrest. Egypt attempted a similar action during the recent demonstrations. I urge students to read the following articles and consider the content alongside our discussions that relate to the topic of media and democracy.

GOVERNMENT AND WEB FREEDOM: Article suitable for A2 students.

This is an interesting article that is a response to the Egyptian government's decision to 'shut down' the internet during the recent demonstrations. This article questions the belief that it is impossible to control internet access. The Egyptian government managed to limit internet access for five days. YEAR 13 LESSON EIGHTEEN [16th FEB 11]: Homework.

Students analysed the first six seconds of the Winter's Bone trailer and eventually identified a mass of media detail. The lesson moved into a consideration of the Section B MEST 3 digital media question : ' Developments in new/digital media mean that audiences can now have access to a greater variety of views and values. To what extent are audiences empowered by these developments?'

We will be attempting this essay as a timed response when we return to school so be aware of the notes that we created in this session.

The final section of the lesson was a 30 minute timed response to questions 2 and 3 of MEST 3 Section A [June 2010].

Homework: ALL students should be constructing their coursework. This is a BIG week. Three students also need to hand me the regulation essay at the start of the next session.

YEAR 12 LESSON NINETEEN [15th FEB 11]: Homework.

Students analysed the first six seconds of the Winter's Bone trailer and explored the mass of information the trailer offers the viewer relating to genre, location, representation of character and audience. The aim of this task was to make students aware of the amount of information/codes and conventions that they need to produce in their own broadcast media. Students also examined a recent two minute film aimed at warning teenagers of the dangers of posting images online. Both trailers are available elsewhere on fishymedia.

The heart of the lesson was an examination of how e-media is used to promote Channel Four's The Secret Millionaire and used to advertise the recently released documentary Exit Through The Gift Shop. The main consideration within this debate is whether new media has changed the relationship between Audience and Producer. How do the Audience benefit from e-media? Has new media merely provided more marketing opportunities for the Producer?

Students also considered the nature of Channel Four's The Secret Millionaire and watched 15 minutes of the episode that will be used for the Cross-Media Study.

Homework: Students must be constructing coursework. It is essential that all students use the half-term break to create their practical media. I will be in school Monday 10 til 3.30 and Wednesday 10 til 3.30 and this time should be used to edit broadcast media, compose music and discuss ideas. I STRONGLY URGE STUDENTS TO ATTEND THESE TWO SESSIONS. THE COURSEWORK DEADLINE IS NOT NEGOTIABLE.

Furthermore, students should watch all three texts that will form the basis of the Cross-Media Study and access the print and e-media linked to the broadcast media to develop an awareness of how the media products are presented across different media platforms [print, e-media, broadcast media]. Students also need to be aware of the codes and conventions associated with documentary filmmaking and develop an understanding of the purpose of documentary. Students should be aware of the work of documentary photographers such as the mighty Don McCullin. Click on link to view some of his work and listen to him discussing the nature of his photography.

MEDIA REGULATION RESOURCES FOR A2.

The ASA has just been granted new powers to police online advertising.Click on link below:

A2 students should be aware of why the ASA judged the recent Yves Saint Laurent perfume advert as being unfit for broadcast on British television. Click on link below to access articles relating to this advertising campaign and navigate through the related stories to research other articles relating to media and regulation.

Click on link to access the banned YSL advertisement:

Click on links to access banned Federici ice-cream print advertisement:

A2 students could use these resources as reference material in the media regulation essay that I expect to receive on Wednesday.

ONLINE SAFETY FILM.

This is a new film from the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre that warns young people about the dangers of uploading material to websites. This may be a useful resource for A2 students when exploring these issues within their own coursework and when considering issues relating to media regulation. AS students need to be aware of how this media text is constructed. ALL students need to be aware of the central message being expressed within this text. Students should navigate through the links attached to this text.

YEAR THIRTEEN LESSON SEVENTEEN [9th FEB 11]: Homework.

Students examined the first section of last summer's MEST 3 examination paper. Students were encouraged to produce a series of notes via class discussion that would allow them to produce a convincing, appropriate, and detailed media response.

Homework: I will be posting notes here to guide students through the essay that relates to media regulation. I will expect this essay to be nestled safely within my grasp before I deliver the next media sermon. Students are also expected to prepare answers for MEST 3 Section 1 questions 2 and 3 as students will be expected to produce a timed response in the next session. YOU MUST ATTEMPT SOME FORM OF RESEARCH TO ANSWER THESE TWO QUESTIONS. The second question demands an understanding and application of the Uses and Gratifications Theory and the third question will demand coherent opinion supported with textual reference.

Students should also be producing their coursework. SL and ZQ need to meet with me on Friday to discuss coursework. Bring some critical autonomy.

A2 RESOURCES FOR REGULATION AND CENSORSHIP: British Board of Film Classification.

This website is a wonderful resource for students interested in regulation and censorship.I would urge all students to navigate through this site. The history section is particularly interesting as the site explores the controversy surrounding films such as Clockwork Orange and Blackboard Jungle and touches upon the 'moral panic' of the digital games industry. There is a student section that offers a series of potential case studies.

YEAR 12 LESSON EIGHTEEN [8th FEB 11]: Homework.

Students were shown a coursework folder to illustrate how evidence of research should be presented within the MEST 2 folder. Students were also shown some possibilities with visual experimentation when using i-movies.

Students watched twenty minutes of Exit Through The Gift Shop and were asked to consider the nature of this media text. The class discussion explored how the documentary conforms to the technical codes and conventions of documentary BUT the narrative structure challenges the linear nature of a traditional documentary narrative.

The final section of the lesson involved students examining the nature of the trailer for ETTGT and producing notes that would enable them to produce a media response to the question:
'How is the trailer constructed to engage the audience ?'

Homework: I expect a detailed media response to the question that relates to the ETTGT trailer. One page of word-processed A4 should be enough. I am interested in the appropriate use of media language and the specific and detailed textual reference of the analysis. Click on link below to access guidance notes:
http://www.docstoc.com/docs/71545137/advice-for-Banksy-trailer-task-two

Click on link below to access ETTGT trailer:

Here is a link to the trailer that I referred to in lesson but did not have time to share with you. This is a trailer that follows all the codes and conventions of the traditional trailer. How much information can you gain in the first seven seconds of this trailer? Freeze the trailer after seven seconds and consider information relating to genre, location, character and audience. Click on link below to access the Winter's Bone trailer:

Obviously, students should be creating their practical productions.

YEAR 12 LESSON SEVENTEEN [1st FEB 11]: Homework.

Students discussed the codes and conventions of documentary and whether Man On Wire or Exit Through The Gift Ship conform to these codes and conventions. The lesson moved into a discussion of representation with specific focus placed upon the Twin Towers, Philippe Petit, and the high wire act across the Towers in Man On Wire and the representation of Banksy and Street Art in Exit Through The Gift Shop.

Homework: Students need to read the e-media linked to the Cross-Media Study texts. In next week's session we will be discussing how the e-media benefits Audience and Producer. Students should be creating their coursework.
