STUDENTS MUST BE ABLE TO ANSWER THE THREE FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS:

  1. CAN THE MEDIA REALLY INFLUENCE HUMAN BEHAVIOUR?
  2. CAN ADVERTISING REALLY INFLUENCE HUMAN BEHAVIOUR?
  3. HOW DO PEOPLE USE MEDIA?
Students must construct their own independent research to develop an awareness of the texts that can be used to construct a convincing, detailed and credible answer to these three fundamental questions.

YEAR 12 LESSON TWENTY-SEVEN [29th April 13] : Homework.

Resources for final session:

Alien trailer:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQ5lPt9edzQ
Eclipse trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1D5goGz0SY
Anchorman trailer:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ip6GolC7Mk0

The session began with a consideration of media language and how media forms could be used to analyse the texts above. The class then attempted to provide a response to the 'Peter Andre' exam text.
An attempt was made to discuss the cross-media study question that students should have prepared for homework but it became apparent that not many individuals had bothered to think about this homework. So we stopped. And the course was complete.

I MAY POST A CROSS-MEDIA PODCAST BEFORE THE EXAM SO KEEP CHECKING THE BLOG. STUDENTS NEED TO CONTINUE TO DEVELOP THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF THE CROSS-MEDIA STUDY. USE PAST QUESTIONS TO INFORM THE FOCUS OF YOUR REVISION.

Here is a podcast from last year that I created to help the class understand the requirements for MEST1 Section A. This should be useful. Ignore my comments about bullet points when answering the cross-media study question because the bullet points have been removed from the exam paper:

Here is the old cross-media study podcast.  Obviously we are using different texts but some of this will be useful. We are still using THE SECRET MILLIONAIRE but the website has changed a great deal and there is some valuable contextual information here. LEND IT YOUR EARS:

YEAR 13 LESSON TWENTY-EIGHT [24th April 13]: Homework.

The lesson began with a critical analysis of the following trailers with the focus being placed on the students ability to use media language in an appropriate manner. This then moved into a consideration of a Section A question relating to the construction of enigma codes.
Alien Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQ5lPt9edzQ

Eclipse trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1D5goGz0SY
Let The Right One In UK Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqkWmUiTm3U
Evaluate how the two trailers use enigma codes to encourage the target audience to watch the films.

The session then 'moved the conversation forward' [spew] to consider the IMPACT OF DIGITAL MEDIA. Class discussion considered the MEST3 Section B question:
'THE INTERNET IS A DEMOCRATIC SPACE WHERE WE ARE ALL FREE TO PARTICIPATE EQUALLY.'
To what extent do you agree with this statement?
The resources below were used to guide the class towards their own independent research. These resources are perfect for constructing a contemporary critical argument that explores the advantages and disadvantages of social media.

The class discussed the two resources below and attempted to shape appropriate content. These two tasks should be attempted for homework.
Resources: MEST 1 Section A.
John Lewis 2012 advert: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jiJShJfqmY

Students should also consider the cross-media question:
'THE AUDIENCE HAS BEEN EMPOWERED BY NEW DIGITAL MEDIA.'
To what extent is this true of your case study?
THIS QUESTION WILL BE THE FOCUS OF OUR FINAL SESSION NEXT WEEK.

HOMEWORK: Students should attempt the two SECTION A exam questions and the cross-media study question. If you can e-mail me these responses next Saturday/Sunday I can have them marked before the Monday session.

NEXT WEEK IS OUR FINAL OFFICIAL SESSION. GET REVISING. LOTS TO DO MEDIA KIDS.

Click on link to access resources:
http://fishymediaresources.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/you-tube-aljazeera-httpwww.html
Class discussion collected a series of notes that can be used to shape a written response to this task. This task is the written homework.
Students received some resources that offer a very clear overview of the expectation of the exam paper. Students need to read these resources.
The rest of the session was a consideration of MEST 3 Section A.
The two resources used to shape a response can be accessed below:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvKyYeJJYwM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QR8A3T6sPzU
Students were asked to consider the questions:
  1. How is technology represented in these two texts?
  2. Can advertising really influence an audience?
The session concluded with a 25 minute written response.

YEAR 12 LESSON TWENTY-FIVE [15th April 13]: Homework.

Students discussed the THATCHER FRONT PAGE RESOURCES. Click on link below:
http://fishymediaresources.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/you-tube-aljazeera-httpwww.html
The aim of this exercise was to explore issues relating to institution and mediation. Students were encouraged to discuss how these resources illustrate how institutional ideology shapes representation. Students were encouraged to analyse each front page and discuss how text and image shape meaning. These skills relate to issues that will be examined in Section A of the examination paper.

Students were asked to consider The Cross-Media Study question:
'TO BE SUCCESSFUL, MEDIA INSTITUTIONS HAVE TO USE A VARIETY OF MEDIA PLATFORMS.' To what extent is this true of your cross-media study?
Discussion considered possible essay content. We will be discussing this title in more detail in next week's session. It might even be a timed essay!

The final section of the session was a task designed to develop the skills that relate to the first section of the examination paper. Click on links below to access resources:
Samsung Galaxy S3 Advert:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QR8A3T6sPzU
1. How are media forms constructed to engage the audience?
2. Who is the target audience?
3. How is technology represented?
4. How are Samsung's brand values communicated?

Apple I-phone 5 advert: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvKyYeJJYwM

Class discussion was excellent today. There was lots of detail and relevant comment. This level of detail needs to be reflected within the written work you trendy hep cats!!

HOMEWORK: Complete the questions that link to the Samsung advert. Students can attempt a one hour timed response or spend a little more time on the task to ensure that the response is detailed and convincing.
STUDENTS MUST USE THE APPROPRIATE MEDIA LANGUAGE AND SUPPORT OPINION WITH SPECIFIC TEXTUAL REFERENCE.
Consider the cross-media question. It might be offered as a timed response next week....oh the horror.
