YEAR 12 LESSON 52 [28th April 15]: Homework

BIG SESSION TODAY KIDDIES. The Cross-Media Study essay created a series of D grades because the question focus was weak. The focus of this session was to prepare students for the next essay. Class discussion considered the question:
'TO BE SUCCESSFUL, MEDIA INSTITUTIONS HAVE TO USE A VARIETY OF MEDIA PLATFORMS.' To what extent is this true of your Cross-Media Study?
The aim of this task is for students to improve their grade by at least one grade. THE QUESTION FOCUS NEEDS TO BE PRECISE. You lot know your texts, you just need to offer a more precise question focus.
The final section of the session used the text below:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NQGPVv1wDU
Students were asked to consider the question:
How is the experience of education represented in this text?

HOMEWORK: Complete the Cross-Media essay and produce a 15 minute response to the Section A question.

YEAR 13 LESSON 52/53/54 [20th/23rd/27th April 15]: Homework

These three sessions contained a discussion relating to potential content for the case study required for Section B of the exam, a discussion of issues relating to the two texts offered in lesson 51, a timed essay on Thursday, and the modelling of a Section A response in today's session.
The texts used in today's [27th April] session can be found below:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_zF7nbEvwY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XOVRnr_7zM
We modelled the first section of a response to the question:
HOW IS THE POWER OF THE MEDIA REPRESENTED IN THESE TWO TEXTS?
WE will be discussing ' Can the media really influence human behaviour' in the next session.
On Thursday I will be using these two texts to generate a Section A response. The question will be:
How is the experience of education represented in these two texts?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HA0_NRjx9KQ

HOMEWORK: Complete the second section of the 'How is the power of the media represented...'question. You need to offer some quality analysis of the Brand text.

The focus of these two sessions was the Cross-Media Study. Please indulge in some independent research. Your research is at the heart of Section B.
We discussed content for our next essay.
On Tuesday we will have a big feedback session linked to the marked essays.

HOMEWORK: Consider content for the Cross-Media essay:
'TO BE SUCCESSFUL, MEDIA INSTITUTIONS HAVE TO USE A VARIETY OF MEDIA PLATFORMS'.
To what extent is this true of your Cross-Media Study?

YEAR 12 LESSON 49 [17th April 15]: Homework

THIS WAS A VERY IMPORTANT SESSION. The whole of this lesson considered the Cross-Media Study question:
AUDIENCES ARE NO LONGER JUST CONSUMERS OF MEDIA TEXTS BUT PRODUCERS TOO. To what extent is this true of your case study?

Obviously, the big decision that you lot have to make is to decide which TWO/THREE media texts will be at the heart of the case study. The minimum requirement is ONE film documentary and ONE hybrid-documentary that is linked to the institution of  Channel Four.
Below is a possible structure for your essay.
  • Begin with reference to the film poster for the film documentary. This clearly attempts to move the audience toward the e-media. Read your exemplar essay.
  • Move into an analysis of what the audience is offered by the e-media. We discussed the idea that social media/blogs etc provide the audience with the opportunity to comment about the film but all these sites are controlled by the institution. All these mediated sites provide an opportunity for the enthusiasm of the audience to be used as a free marketing device and any critical comments can be deleted from sites. Individual Facebook/Twitter sites may be an exception. If the audience shares the trailer on their own social media the institution will not be able to control content. WHAT DOES THE E-MEDIA OFFER THE AUDIENCE? WHAT DOES THE E-MEDIA OFFER THE PRODUCER? WHO BENEFITS? DON"T LOSE SIGHT OF THE QUESTION. If the audience has been moved to examine the e-media after consuming the film poster, how does the e-media attempt to encourage the viewer to watch the film? WHAT DOES THE E-MEDIA OFFER THE AUDIENCE? Furthermore, how can the audience use the e-media AFTER they have consumed the film?? I really liked Chloe's ONE DIRECTION comment because if the audience are creating fan videos, they are producing???
  • Then move on to discuss the synergy between the broadcast media of a Channel Four hybrid documentary such as Educating Yorkshire/One Born Every Minute/24 Hours in A and E/ The Secret Millionare.....YOU DECIDE. Again, you are expected to offer an evaluation of the content that it is possible for the AUDIENCE to consume via the e-media. The remit of Channel Four is to offer programmes of an 'educative value' so please consider the focus of the remit and how this reflects the content being offered by the e-media. The e-media offered by Channel Four offers a vast amount of useful information to the viewer. IT INFORMS and, with The Secret Millionaire, actively encourages the audience to become an active participant within their own community. AGAIN....THE CONTENT OF THE ESSAY DEPENDS UPON THE TEXT THAT YOU HAVE SELECTED. DIFFERENT PROGRAMMES OFFER DIFFERENT CONTENT. Don't lose sight of how the remit dictates content
  • Students could offer a reference to media theory. Dyer is always a good theory to use when examining Channel Four as the aim of Channel Four's media products reflects the need for community and empathy. Dyer believes our society has lost these features and can only access this sense of unity from consuming media. Danny Dyer eh? What a ****.
SO....GOOD LUCK. I feel that I  was repeating myself in today's lesson. You lot just have to write the essay and show me through your writing that you comprehend the expectation of the Cross-Media element of the course.

HOMEWORK: Complete the Cross-Media essay. I want it handed to me in Tuesday's session. I expect people who were not in the lesson to write an essay. I have a blog. Read it.

YEAR 13 LESSON 51 [16th April 15]: Homework

Back in to the exam. The class were offered two texts in an attempt to replicate Section A of the examination. Class discussion considered the two texts in relation to the two questions. The content of the class discussion generated by this task confronted the key philosophical issues at the heart of the course. If students can offer a coherent and precise argument in response to these two questions, this will provide a solid framework for the exam.
Text A:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_zF7nbEvwY
TEXTB:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XOVRnr_7zM

How is the power of the media represented in these two texts?

Can the media really influence human behaviour?

HOMEWORK: Consider possible content for these two questions as you MAY be asked to produce a timed response on Monday.

YEAR 12 LESSON 48 [14th April 15]: Homework

Today we were back in the building and considering the Cross-Media study which relates to SectionB of the exam. Discussion considered the nature of the AUDIENCE/PRODUCER debate and linked this debate to our Cross-Media Study. Students were asked to consider the question:
'AUDIENCES ARE NO LONGER JUST CONSUMERS OF MEDIA TEXTS BUT PRODUCERS TOO'. To what extent is this true of the media products in your case study?
The class were offered an exemplar essay and encouraged to select the two texts that will provide the focus of their Case Study. The class were made aware of the synergy between the broadcast media 'One Born Every Minute' and the Channel Four e-media.
THE E-MEDIA IN OUR CASE STUDY IS ABSOLUTELY CENTRAL TO ANY DEBATE BUT STUDENTS NEED TO BE AWARE OF HOW THE PRINT/BROADCAST/E-MEDIA PLATFORMS ENABLE THE AUDIENCE TO CONSUME, RESPOND AND PARTICIPATE IN A SPECIFIC MEDIA TEXT.

HOMEWORK: Complete the evaluation for coursework and research your two cross-media texts. Friday is my coursework deadline day. WE will be attempting the Cross-Media Study essay in the next session. Bring some wisdom.
