It is believed that nearly two million people still read this newspaper every day and the online version attracts over 100 million views per month. John Berger, in his classic text WAYS OF SEEING, stated that 'Advertisers use these aspirations to sell products to consumers that they do not need. They use the myth of identity to convince consumers to replace their perfectly old things, with new things. 'The purpose of publicity is to make the spectator marginally dissatisfied with his present way of life.'

'[Advertising] proposes to each of us that we transform ourselves, or our lives, by buying something more. This more, it proposes, will make us in some way richer – even though we will be poorer by having spent our money. Advertising persuades us of such a transformation by showing us people who have apparently been transformed and are, as a result, enviable. Advertising is about social relations, not objects. Its promise is not of pleasure, but of happiness: happiness as judged from the outside by others. The happiness of being envied is glamour.'

Zoella advent calender controversy. This links to the media issue concerned with Vloggers exploiting their audience to make money.
