REVISION GUIDANCE.

Every written task that has been offered to my students has been accompanied by guidance notes posted on fishymedia. I would advise all my students to print these notes to help with your revision.

If you access the fishymedia documents at docstoc.com you can print all my guidance notes or you can trawl through the blog entries here at the fishymedia blog. Year 12 received a lot of guidance with tasks that relate to MEST 1 Section A so it is advisable to revisit docstoc and print the guidance notes. If you click on the link below you can navigate through the doc.stoc fishymedia documents.

YEAR 12 CROSS-MEDIA STUDY EXEMPLAR ESSAY.

Here is an essay to aid your understanding of MEST 1 SECTION B. Click on link below to access essay:

I have given students a list of cross-media study questions and would advise students to use these questions as the focus for your revision. Consider how you would answer each question. Create some detailed spider diagrams that would allow you to answer these questions. I have yet to receive any essays...please feel free to construct a cross-media essay.

Here is a cross-media study question from the June 2009 paper:
Account for the similarities and differences in the codes and conventions used in the media products from your case study.
In your answer you should:
*provide a brief outline of your case study
*compare how and why media products from your case study are similar and/or different within and across media platforms
*support your answer with reference to a range of examples from three media platforms.

The only way to comprehend the requirements of the cross-media study is to apply your knowledge to a question. GO ON...I DARE YOU!

HOW CAN SOCIAL NETWORKS MAKE MONEY?

Year 13 students may be interested in this BBC article that explores how social networks can make money. Good explanation of the role of advertising:

YEAR 13 LESSON TWENTY FIVE [13th April 11]: Homework.

The Media bloke was moderating media coursework but still managed to provide a fifteen minute motivational speech. Students need to revisit their notes and synthesise all teacher comments, essay content, handouts and articles etc with the aim of arming themselves for MEST 3. The coursework is in the bag and very good it was too...so now to the exam. I will be posting podcasts, essays and links to relevant articles throughout the break so keep visiting FISHYMEDIA.

Homework: Read your notes. Watch the Virtual Revolution. Navigate through the articles posted on FISHYMEDIA throughout the year with the aim of developing your ability to produce a sophisticated response to MEST 3 Sections A and B. EAT CHOCOLATE. Try and discover the Westwood Elk. He is out there.

YEAR 12 LESSON Twenty Six [12th April 11]: Homework.

Media bloke was moderating so the lesson consisted of a brief lecture relating to revision over the Easter holidays. It is essential that students read through their notes and synthesise the knowledge/teacher comments/media language thrown at them over the last seven months.

I would advise all students to focus upon the cross-media study.Read the notes and revisit the key texts. I repeat....any media student that has not watched the three key texts is a D-Head. How can you be serious about your own education if you have yet to watch MOW/SM/ETTGS?

I will be posting essays, podcasts and links throughout the Spring Holiday so stay tuned to FISHYMEDIA. Drop me an e-mail or a blog comment if you want me to answer any queries. I intend to spend my break searching for the famous Beverley Westwood Elk. A fearsome creature that is rarely sighted.

Homework: REVISE. FOCUS UPON THE CROSS-MEDIA STUDY. EAT CHOCOLATE.

Here are links from fishymedia that relate to the CROSS-MEDIA STUDY:

Students with A/B aspirations should explore how documentaries use print media and e-media to market their media product and engage the audience and how contemporary documentary conforms to the idea that documentary is closer to truth than a fictional media text. For example, keen students could visit the media that relates to the BBC's recent 'Wonders of the Universe', Channel Four's 'Jamie's Dream School' or the 2011 Oscar winning documentary 'INSIDE JOB' created by Charles H.Ferguson.

YEAR 13 LESSON TWENTY FOUR [6th April 11]: Homework.

The session consisted of a class discussion inspired by the two 'impact of digital media' questions in MEST 3 Section B of last year's June exam paper. Students were encouraged to consider content that would enable them to produce five paragraphs of material for each question . In the final 30 minutes of the session students produced a two paragraph written response to one of the questions.

Homework: Put finishing touches to coursework. Read the Media!

YEAR 12 LESSON TWENTY FIVE [5th April 11]: Homework.

Students were offered the MEST 1 Section A exam paper from January 2010. The class discussed the questions in the first half of the session and class discussion generated a series of appropriate and relevant notes. Students produced a written response in the second hour of the lesson.

It is hoped that your own creative media has provided an insight into the process of how media is created and that this insight has developed the ability of the students to analyse media in a more critical manner.

Homework: Read the cross-media study material.

YEAR 13 LESSON TWENTY THREE [30th March 11]: Homework.

After two lessons of coursework related creative media and discussions relating to the content of individual critical investigations, normal service was resumed. The focus of the lesson was MEST3 Section A and students were introduced to two media texts that represent the abuse of alcohol. After an extended class discussion and teacher directed note taking, students produced a 45 minute written response.
Click on link below to access the two texts:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAmI1MJECZ4

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/video/2010/may/20/rankin-anti-binge-drinking-ad

The questions were:
1. How do the two media products represent the misuse of alcohol?
2.Why would media institutions construct such challenging material?
You may refer to other media products to support your answer.
3.Some media research has raised concerns about unrestricted access to controversial images. Do you think control is necessary?
You should refer to other media products to support your answer.

Homework: Complete coursework.

YEAR 12 LESSON TWENTY FOUR [29th March 11]: Homework.

Students were asked to revisit the cross-media study question: Audiences are no longer just consumers of media texts but producers too.

The last set of essays clearly expressed the fact that most students were struggling with the Audience/Producer debate so the whole aim of this lesson was to reinforce how this debate links to our case study. The essays produced in the second session were excellent. Well done.

Homework: Read all the material I have provided that relates to the cross-media study and watch the texts. If a question appears in the exam that asks you to consider the content of each documentary narrative, you must be able to refer to specific moments from Man On Wire/ ETTGS/ SECRET MILLIONAIRE or any documentary/hybrid-documentary texts that you have used to further enhance your case study. It is possible that the question might ask you to consider issues relating to Representation, so you must be familiar with our key texts.

I have provided a booklet and exemplar essays. Read all the material.

Any student who has yet to watch all three texts is wasting my time. BE A STUDENT. Visit the texts.

BANKSY DOCUMENTARY IS A PRANK: Article questioning the validity of ETTGS.

Year 12 students really should read this article. It relates to Exit Through The Gift Shop being a 'prankumentary'. Documentary is always associated with a mediated 'reality' or 'truth' but this interpretation views the whole film as being a Banksy joke.It questions the reality of the film and is an essential resource for our cross-media study. Documentary is not objective truth and this article suggests that ETTGS is the ultimate example of documentary as fiction.
