Every written task that has been offered to my students has been accompanied by guidance notes posted on fishymedia. I would advise all my students to print these notes to help with your revision.
If you access the fishymedia documents at docstoc.com you can print all my guidance notes or you can trawl through the blog entries here at the fishymedia blog. Year 12 received a lot of guidance with tasks that relate to MEST 1 Section A so it is advisable to revisit docstoc and print the guidance notes. If you click on the link below you can navigate through the doc.stoc fishymedia documents.
Hey there!
ReplyDeleteI'm studying Media Studies at AS Level and my exam is May 17th. I love your site! It's really useful and I've learnt a great deal from it, so thanks for all the hard work.
I am just freaking out a bit because my exam is VERY near and I havent even begun researching or revising a Cross-Media Study for Section B of the exam.
I literally have no idea what to do! Initially, I wanted to to Quiz Shows, but failed to think of three great examples across all media platforms that would allow me to explore them in depth. However, now I am considering looking at artists who experience cross-media promotion, such as Lady Gaga (her presence on Twitter, YouTube, TV) and maybe someone from the X Factor and an "underground" artist from MySpace?
I am so stuck and would appreciate your help SO MUCH! I have asked so many people for help/advice and no one can provide me with SOLID guidance, least of all my teacher. I would love to hear your thoughts on what I've said and also how you would go about the exam!
Thanks, Chris
chris..thanks for positive comments.much appreciated.as for the cross-media study...a study of how an artist/musician uses three media platforms to market themselves would be a decent cross-media study. You could explore a musician specific website and explore how the artist uses digital media to access the target audience, one of the musician's promotional music videos which will allow you to provide an exploration of narrative[enigma codes, binary opposites, genre etc],and a newspaper/magazine interview or music magazine print advertisement.A vacuous-pop- clothes-horse like Lady Gaga will have a mass of promotional material across three platforms.you could compare her marketing and representation with a band such as the Arctic Monkeys and consider how the AM's use the three media platforms to promote themselves....but one artist should be enough.Check out my documentary/hybrid-documentary cross-media resources and this should provide you with an idea of appropriate content for Mest 1 Section B.Read the exemplar essays I've posted. You will need to have some understanding of how the Uses and Gratifications Theory relates to your study.
ReplyDeleteit's a bit late in the day so you best 'get your arse in gear'.
Good luck chris.

Thank you! :)
ReplyDeleteI know, it's WAY too close to my exam, thats why I'm panicking. My Media Teacher is so...well, let's just say she's not resourceful.
So would you advise exploring musicians as a cross-media study? Or does it literally have to be three media texts that are pulled from each platform: TV, print, internet?
I am at a loss at what I actually need to know when going into this part of the exam. What am I being marked on? What knowledge do I need to demonstrate? The thing is, I am worried that the research I do on musicians will not be applicable to the question in the exam
i.e How do your media texts tell stories?
Audiences are not just consumers, but producers too -
AHH!
But thank you so much for the reply; it's nice to hear from someone who *actually* knows what they're talking about for once.
chris...i would look at two artists/musicians who are attempting to engage a different audience demographic. for example Lady GG and The Arctic Monkeys. I would look at their websites, examine a music video, and explore a magazine/newspaper article or advertisements that appeared in print media aimed at promoting their work. For example posters that advertise a tour or a new tune/album.
ReplyDeletethe cross-media study will examine your knowledge and understanding of how meanings and responses are created and received and how these meanings can vary or stay the same across different media platforms. If you can answer the following questions you can produce a decent Section B response:
how has digital media changed the relationship between audience and producer?
how has digital media transformed how we consume a media text? for example how have mobile devices changed how we consume music? significance of the mobile phone?
how did myspace transform the relationship between audience and producer? myspace was instrumental in the popularity of lily allen and the arctic monkeys.
has MP3 file sharing revolutionised the music industry?
how can the audience access the products being produced by the artist?
how significant was shawn fanning and napster? fishymedia has a mass of material that relates to the influence of fanning upon how we consume music. go fishing.
how does an audience select, consume and respond to music products?
how do the three media platforms link to each other?
how has digital media transformed the relationship between audience and producer?
can the audience dictate the content of a media product?
how has digital media transformed the relationship between the artist and the music fan?
is the music industry an example of cultural 'dumbing down'?
how has digital media changed how a musician can market their work?
how does representation differ across the media platforms?
how does the platform relate to target audience?
how significant is the visual iconography used across the media platforms? how do the images relate to representation?
how are narrative codes use to dictate representation? how is media being used to create representation? what is the story being offered by the musician to the audience? clues relating to target audience?
the AQA website now has some useful material that relates to mest 1 section B so I would advise you to visit this site.
hope this is useful.
good luck chris.
