YEAR 12 LIT..18th June 2018

In the last session I introduced an Anthology of poetry to assist you when preparing for your COURSEWORK. We discussed how MODERNISM attempted to create a new literary form to capture the experience of the new century. I referred to the work of Picasso and how his work changed in an attempt to find a new form of artistic expression to reflect the complexity of the industrial world. How is education represented in these two texts?

Questions 2 and 3 will ask you to consider media issues that link in some way to the two texts in the opening question. Students may need to apply MEDIA THEORY and show an awareness of HOW AN AUDIENCE MAY USE a media text. Students need to also be aware of NARRATIVE THEORY.
For example, HOW might an audience gain pleasure from watching a documentary such as Citizen Four , Westworld, or Jonathan Pie?
Students must be able to apply media theory to these kind of questions.
HOW MIGHT THE AUDIENCE GAIN PLEASURE FROM A TEXT? Be aware of the theories that suggest that the audience is passive and asctive.

Question 2....How might an audience gain pleasure from a series such as Westworld?
Question 3 may ask students to consider a wider media issue. It could ba absolutely anything..form the influence of social media to the difficulties of regulating media..Question 3 will demand that you illustrate your underrstanding of current media issues and debates..

I have made it very clear that students will only be successful in Section B if they have indulged in some serious independent research. The whole aim of this section is for students to offer a wide range of media examples when confronting the focus of the question. Conclusions need to be evaluative and powerful. Conclusions need to leave the examiner feeling that you actually care about this subject.

The media issue here is that both these films are 'low budget' but have forced their way into the  filmic mainstream. The access to the means of production is allowing independent filmmakers to challenge the very narrow representations created by mainstream film producers. Access to affordable digital media to create and market a product is allowing the film industry to move beyond the simplistic, and mainly white middle-class, depictions of ethnicity and gender. It is also allowing genuinely talented artists to realise and share their creative talent.

TOBY YOUNG and social media....

In today's lesson we discussed why the recent outrage surrounding the appointment by Jo Johnson, the Minister for Universities, of Toby Young to be part of a group looking at the regulation of Universities. There was a major movement on Twitter to discredit Young's appointment and it is reported that Young himself attempted to delete 40 000 of his own tweets. Change.org had gathered nearly 250 000 signatures demanding the government reverse their decision. This use of social media eventually inspired Young to resign this morning. This 'social media moment' could be used by students as an example of social media empowering the individual as social media was used to challenge and overturn a deeply unpopular political decision. Today Jo Johnson has been removed from his post as Minister for Universities and is now, from today, the Minister for Transport. It is perfectly possible to use this textual reference as an example of social media encouraging young people to engage with political culture as it appears that social media, in this case, was used to successfully challenge and CHANGE an unpopular political decision. OBVIOUSLY....I am aware that there is a very strong counter argument to this viewpopint...and I expect students, in the exam, to be able to offer a detailed counter argument to the idea that social media can encourage young people to become involved in political debate.
