YEAR 12 LESSONS 27/28: Welcome Back Media Fiends.

If you are unaware of the above photograph, you are not aware of contemporary media issues and debates. Where is this? What is happening? Why has this photograph provoked media debate? IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT STUDYING MEDIA IN YEAR 13, YOU MUST BE AWARE OF CONTEMPORARY MEDIA ISSUES AND DEBATES.
Be aware of how The Glastonbury Festival uses digital media this coming weekend. What will this tell us about digital technology?

The two sessions after the AS exams were designed to provide a flavour of Year 13. We have discussed the impact of digital media and in the last lesson I showed clips from the 1955 film Blackboard Jungle and the 2008 film Kidulthood in an attempt to generate a discussion relating to Representation.

The key resource to digest BEFORE Year 13 is the BBC documentary The Virtual Revolution. THIS IS AN ESSENTIAL RESOURCE. Click on the link below to access this documentary:

The e-media linked to this documentary is a monumental resource and contains interviews with a host of media critics. Students need to be aware of the views of Andrew Keen and Clay Shirky and their extended interviews are available via this site.
All the key media issues and debates relating to the impact of digital media can be found on this page. It is a detailed and essential Y13 resource.

Here is a fishymedia link to Shirky and Keen:

Also...this documentary is a key resource. This is a recent American documentary titled The Digital Nation. It is fantastic. WATCH IT!

Obviously, if students want to know about the content of the Year 13 course, all my lessons with the current Year 13 are still available to peruse on fishymedia. Fill your media boots.

HOMEWORK: Next week students will be creating 60/90 second films so you need to bring some IDEAS and props to help create your film. Some of the titles we discussed in the last lesson were...Happy...Smile...Stress Head and The Mythical Chair. Students will be expected to edit their film in a creative manner using all the editing options provided by the software. Next week is a purely creative and technical lesson so you must bring some ideas to E2.
