TURKEY ATTEMPT TO BAN TWITTER.

Connor...you definitely need to watch this news segment from last night's BBC Newsnight. All students need to digest these resources as they are relevant for any consideration of digital media and democracy.

YEAR 13 LESSONS FORTY-FIVE/FORTY-SIX: COURSEWORK

Students should be completing critical investigations and constructing Linked Productions. On Tuesday I saw Jess, Beth, Liam, Ed and Connor. I expect students to pop in and see me on Friday to show me work. Liam, Harrison and Tom MUST show me evidence that they are completing work. Maya and Hattie also need to show me evidence that their written work is moving forward. Jess? How is the critical investigation?
HOMEWORK: COMPLETE COURSEWORK.

YEAR 12 LESSON FORTY-THREE/FORTY-FOUR: COURSEWORK.

Students have been filming and generally creating coursework. keep sending me work. In today's lesson I tried to encourage M to create print media that is a little more creative. The two images at the top of this blog are the result of this morning's work. The image with text is suitable for Brief One. Students should view photography as a creative medium and not just as a form that is used for simple single images. I urge students to make full use of the magic that is photoshop.
HOMEWORK: Continue to complete COURSEWORK.

KICKSTARTER promo for film project.

This is a great example of how digital media has transformed the relationship between audience and producer. Kickstarter is a very interesting site. PRANO BAILEY-BOND is a brilliant filmmaker. Watch some of her work.
I hope this film receives a decent amount of funding.

YEAR 13 LESSON FORTY-THREE/FORTY FOUR [11th/14th March 14]: Homework

The aim of these two sessions was to discuss issues relating to MEST3 Section B and reinforce the idea that IT IS TIME TO CONSTRUCT COURSEWORK. Friday's session was a one-on-one with three students. The next two weeks will not be formal media lessons as I expect students to be constructing coursework. I want students to bombard me with Critical Investigations and students need to be constructing LINKED PRODUCTIONS. The next two weeks are MASSIVE.
HARRISON...YOU NEED TO SEE ME. I WANT TO SEE EVIDENCE THAT YOU ARE CONSTRUCTING WORK.
HOMEWORK: CONSTRUCT COURSEWORK.
On Tuesday I want to see Jess, Beth, Liam, Tom, Ed and Harrison during our lesson [period five]. Liam, Tom and Ed need to show me that they have developed their critical investigations as discussed today.
50% of your final grade is now your responsibility. DO IT.

YEAR 12 LESSON FORTY-TWO [13th March 14]: Homework

The aim of this session was to explore issues relating to the cross-media study and also reinforce the idea that IT IS COURSEWORK TIME. The next two weeks will not be formal lessons but I expect students to visit me with issues relating to coursework. On MONDAY I expect ALL students to visit me to show me work. WHERE ARE YOU CAMERON? YOU NEED TO VISIT MY WORLD TO PROVE YOU ARE CONSTRUCTING YOUR E-MEDIA. Simon...don't forget our appointment on Monday. ALL STUDENTS NEED TO CONVINCE ME THAT THEY ARE CONFRONTING THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE BRIEF. E-mail work to me. I need to see some evidence of creativity and engagement. I expect all students to make the effort to come and see me on Monday. You need to convince me that you are producing work.

HOMEWORK: COMPLETE COURSEWORK.

YEAR 13 LESSON FORTY-TWO [11th March 14]: Homework

The aim of today's session was to discuss any issues relating to coursework and discuss the first Impact of Digital Media question from last summer's exam paper. The class discussed possible content before producing a one paragraph response. Students were expected to produce a precise, structured and detailed critical response.
HOMEWORK: ALL students need to be completing critical investigations and linked production work. On Friday I would like to see Liam, Ed, Tom and Harrison to discuss coursework. Next week I will be having tutorials with all members of our media community. LOTS TO DO FOLKS.

YEAR 12 LESSON FORTY-ONE [10th March 14]: Homework

The focus of this session was to develop the skills required to answer issues relating to Section A of the exam. Before the students attempted to 'model' a response to the first question of the 'Mini Cooper text', discussion concerned the construction of coursework. STUDENTS MUST BE AWARE OF MY 'CHANGE OF GEARS' remark. Broadcast media needs to offer evidence of a change of narrative tone. IMAGINE that your audience is very reluctant to engage with your text. YOUR CHALLENGE IS TO ENGAGE AN AUDIENCE WHO DO NOT WANT TO ENGAGE WITH YOUR WORK. MAKE THEM ENGAGE WITH THE TEXT. THIS WILL TAKE TIME AND EFFORT SO DON'T MAKE ME PLAY THAT AWFUL CHER VIDEO.
The heart of the session was the modelling of exemplar material. The example that we constructed uses media language to construct an analysis, has a precise question focus, and offers a coherent and clear critical argument.
HOMEWORK: Construct the Cross-Media Study essay. Refer to the modelling of the cross-media paragraph that we created last week. I will post a potential essay structure ASAP. The whole aim of this task is for students to individualise their cross-media work. I want to see evidence of independent study. I also want students to offer a very precise question focus. THE FINAL SECTION OF EACH PARAGRAPH NEEDS TO BE CONFRONTING THE FOCUS OF THE QUESTION.
Students also need to be constructing their coursework. LOTS TO DO FOLKS.

2013 HULL FOLK FESTIVAL DOCUMENTARY.

I have just released to the world a documentary that captures the sights and sounds of the 2013 HULL FOLK FESTIVAL. The film was premiered in a fine HULL pub called The Polar Bear on Saturday and will be used to promote the 2014 event. Students might like to watch my film and consider any technical/narrative questions that you may want to ask me about the film's construction. ALL students should be attempting to construct coursework so if you are curious as to how or why I used a certain transition or used a certain piece of audio...ASK ME AND I WILL EXPLAIN MY CREATIVE AIM!!

YEAR 13 LESSON FORTY-ONE [7th March 14]: Homework

The aim of this session was to discuss issues relating to Section A and B of MEST3. Class discussion considered the Section B exam question:
NEW AND DIGITAL MEDIA HAVE LED MANY MEDIA PRODUCERS TO INVOLVE THEIR AUDIENCES MORE. HOWEVER AUDIENCE INVOLVEMENT IS ONLY SUPERFICIAL AND MEDIA PRODUCERS HAVE ENSURED THEY MAINTAIN CONTROL.
Use your case study to evaluate whether new and digital media have challenged the role of producers.
Class discussion considered possible content for this question. We will be attempting this essay in the very near future; possibly as a timed essay.
The second section of the lesson considered issues relating to Section A of the exam paper.

HOMEWORK: Obviously students should be completing their coursework but I also want a written response to the question:
How is the representation of masculinity constructed to appeal to the audience?
You may also refer to other media products to support your answer.

YEAR 12 LESSON FORTY-TWO [6th March 14]: Homework

The aim of this session was to prepare students for the cross-media essay question:
DO INSTITUTIONS IN YOUR CASE STUDY HAVE AN EQUAL PRESENCE ON EACH MEDIA PLATFORM?
Class discussion generated a possible structure for this essay and students considered why the EMEDIA in our cross-media study seems to be the most important platform.
HOMEWORK: Complete the essay. I want to see students beginning to 'individualise' their cross-media study. I would like students to offer evidence of independent study.

YEAR 13 LESSON THIRTY-NINE/FORTY [27th Feb/4th March 14]: Homework

These two sessions considered possible content for section A of last summer's MEST3 examination paper. The Tuesday session included a brief written response.
HOMEWORK: Consider how to answer questions 2 and 3 of the examination paper as on Friday we will be attempting a written response to one of these questions. I would also like students to consider the Impact of Digital Media questions offered in the exam paper as we will be discussing possible content on Friday. Students also need to be constructing coursework. LOTS TO DO FOLKS.

YEAR 12 LESSON FORTY-ONE [3rd March 14]: Homework

The aim of this session was consider possible content for the cross-media essay title:
DO INSTITUTIONS IN YOUR CASE STUDY HAVE AN EQUAL PRESENCE ON EACH MEDIA PLATFORM?
The session then moved on to consider Section A of the exam. Click on link below to access media text:
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HUmrDa5PPE
Class discussion considered possible content for the questions:
  1. How is the video constructed to engage the audience?
HOMEWORK: Students need to be constructing coursework but I would also like students to consider the cross-media task as this will be a homework at the end of Thursday's lesson. Students need to be researching other Channel Four hybrid-documentaries and other film documentary products.
In the lesson I referred to Bill Hicks and his approach to the world of marketing. Click on link below to access Mr. Hicks:
