YEAR 12 LESSON NINETEEN [15th FEB 11]: Homework.

Students analysed the first six seconds of the Winter's Bone trailer and explored the mass of information the trailer offers the viewer relating to genre, location, representation of character and audience. The aim of this task was to make students aware of the amount of information/codes and conventions that they need to produce in their own broadcast media. Students also examined a recent two minute film aimed at warning teenagers of the dangers of posting images online. Both trailers are available elsewhere on fishymedia.

The heart of the lesson was an examination of how e-media is used to promote Channel Four's The Secret Millionaire and used to advertise the recently released documentary Exit Through The Gift Shop. The main consideration within this debate is whether new media has changed the relationship between Audience and Producer. How do the Audience benefit from e-media? Has new media merely provided more marketing opportunities for the Producer?

Students also considered the nature of Channel Four's The Secret Millionaire and watched 15 minutes of the episode that will be used for the Cross-Media Study.

Homework: Students must be constructing coursework. It is essential that all students use the half-term break to create their practical media. I will be in school Monday 10 til 3.30 and Wednesday 10 til 3.30 and this time should be used to edit broadcast media, compose music and discuss ideas. I STRONGLY URGE STUDENTS TO ATTEND THESE TWO SESSIONS. THE COURSEWORK DEADLINE IS NOT NEGOTIABLE.

Furthermore, students should watch all three texts that will form the basis of the Cross-Media Study and access the print and e-media linked to the broadcast media to develop an awareness of how the media products are presented across different media platforms [print, e-media, broadcast media]. Students also need to be aware of the codes and conventions associated with documentary filmmaking and develop an understanding of the purpose of documentary. Students should be aware of the work of documentary photographers such as the mighty Don McCullin. Click on link to view some of his work and listen to him discussing the nature of his photography.
